The Man that is EJ Macabenta

The Ateneo has produced outstanding individuals who are potent in multiple fields. The diversity of the Ateneo’s curriculum has produced individuals such as Ezra Jed Macabenta, a Management Engineering graduate back in 2011 with a minor in Music Literature. A diverse choice in tracks has EJ enjoying the best of both worlds, having both the practical side and the passionate side of his life in check.

I have been blessed to have had the chance to talk to EJ about his time in the Ateneo and the impact of music in his life. Having basic knowledge in playing the guitar and the drums has already had an amazing impact in his life, and in addition to this, his understanding of basic music composition and creation of music has given his passion a whole new dimension. Having this under his bet, the self proclaimed “Anthony Bourdain of Music” has the ability and beautiful ear in knowing what sounds go well together, but he is not the type of musician who would give you a masterpiece right there and then. His love for music along with his basic knowledge of the craft that keeps him going has given this branch of life and passion a different paradigm altogether.

“Music has always been my passion.”

He puts so much emotion into his passion and craft, but he also emphasizes the practicality of taking Management Engineering in college. The insurance of taking Management Engineering in college gives EJ the track for maintaining a great financial future, but it is through music and his love for it which made him persistent in pursuing Music Literature. His intense passion and emotion towards music never wavered and continues to be with him today. Music has helped develop EJ into the person he is today, stating that this is the thing that has helped him get past his insecurities and anxieties during his life in the university. It has helped with the discernment throughout life’s challenges, and prepares him for everything that life has for him.

Now that EJ is done with his life in the Ateneo, he has continued his path to the marketing and strategy for a pharmaceutical company as a regional brand builder. Today, music is still a big part of his life, stating that having a job and and balancing his personal life is stressful, so he never forgets to go back to run back to music as his refuge. “It’s like a time machine that takes you back to the good times and everything just feels better.”

As for his last words for Music Literature minors,

“Never feel entitled to anything. Entitlement hinders learning. The real world is harsh and only respects those who have failed miserably many times but still choose to stand up and carry on. So always choose to get out of your comfort zone but never forget about your passion. It is your home. And it’d be nice to be able to chill at home when life gets too complicated.”

This is music for him; this is Ezra Jed Macabenta.
