In 2010, the pioneers of Blue Sound proclaimed, “Music is alive in the Ateneo de Manila.” Every edition of Blue Sound since then has proved this sentiment to be true. The Atenean community is vibrant with music. It’s hard to go a day in the Ateneo without hearing a group of students jamming together. In addition, orgs such as the Ateneo Musicians’ Pool, the Ateneo Blue Repertory, the Ateneo College Glee Club, and the Ateneo Blue Symphony have seen an increase in audience members and enthusiasts.

Blue Sound was once limited to being written by Music Literature minors, but it has expanded since to the involvement of a wide array of students taking up Basic Music Resarch and Criticism; thus, resulting in more interdisciplinary articles. Before 2016, distribution of Blue Sound was limited to several individuals and was only known to those who belonged to Basic Music Resarch and Criticism. We realized that in order for Blue Sound to grow and to become part of the public consciousness we had to transform it into an online magazine that could be shared to a wider community.

Through Blue Sound, we not only want people to gain more knowledge about Ateneo’s thriving music scene, but we also want them to become more critical of what they are listening to. Moreover, Blue Sound aims to shed light on past Music Literature minors who have continued to remain musical beyond their lives in the university.

This is the beginning of Blue Sound’s voyage into the mainstream. We want readers to remember that music must be shared in order for it to survive!

The new Blue Sound logo attempts to capture the immersive experience of music, while incorporating the literary aspect of music criticism. It highlights the importance of not only appreciating the baseline aesthetics of music, but also understanding its technical and thematic intricacies in order to formulate an informed opinion on its artistic value. In recognizing the importance of this craft, it can be understood how music is indeed essential to life.
